Stuart M. Homer MD and Associates provides the following clinical services and kidney treatments:

Consultative General Nephrology

We provide consultations for abnormalities of the kidneys or the urine. These might include diminished function of the kidneys or abnormal protein or blood in the urine. Kidney problems are often associated with elevations of blood pressure, salt and water retention, and/or abnormal levels of sodium, potassium or calcium in the blood. Conditions such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, systemic lupus erythematosus and others are often associated with kidney disease. We perform diagnostic testing, analysis, medication adjustments and management of these conditions and any other associated problems.

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Management

We provide monitoring of kidney function in order to reduce complications of chronic kidney disease and stop or slow the progression to renal failure. Without proper intervention, kidney disease may contribute to anemia (low blood count), high blood pressure, bone and vascular disease in addition to an array of other medical issues. We work with our patients to optimize their diet, life style and medications to help minimize or prevent these problems.

Management of Kidney Failure

In the United States over 420,000 patients receive dialysis treatment (2.1 million worldwide). For those of our patients who develop kidney failure and require dialysis, we seek to facilitate the transition minimizing disruption to lifestyle. We help choose the modality which is best suited the patient and their family from a holistic perspective. We also care for patients who come to us already receiving dialysis treatments, and we seek to optimize their management with the goal of minimizing complications and enhance well-being. We are aggressive regarding pursuing renal transplantation when appropriate, and we are well connected with the top programs at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, St. Barnabas Medical Center, Columbia University Medical Center in New York City, The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, among others.

Follow-up Care After Kidney or Kidney-Pancreas Transplant

We closely monitor the function of the transplant to improve long-term outcome and reduce complications. We coordinate with the transplant centers to adjust anti-rejection medications, monitor kidney function, and treat complications and associated medical problems when necessary.

Comprehensive Evaluation and Treatment of Hypertension

We seek to achieve optimum control of blood pressure to reduce the risk of stroke, heart attack and kidney disease. We pursue a rigorous approach to diagnosis and management leading to effective treatment. This strive to reduce the number of medications required to achieve the desired blood pressure goal. We offer ambulatory blood pressure monitoring and impedance cardiography as part of our diagnostic armamentarium.

Evaluation and Treatment of Kidney Stones

Patients who have formed stones in the past are at higher risk of developing new stones in the future. Lithotripsy or surgical removal of the stones provides immediate relief, but the fundamental treatment requires careful medical evaluation and risk abatement to prevent new stone formation. Our office offers analysis of an individuals’ likelihood of forming new stones, and a tailored approach to preventing them.
